Tension and discontent rising once again in the United Kingdom

Posted on 5:50 AM by Unknown

UK strike protests

Slowly, imperceptibly tension and discontent in the UK is rising once again. Looking at the UK horoscope confirms the fact that beneath the surface, all is not right and the people are getting rather exasperated with cuts, austerity and their standards of living dropping at an alarming rate. The budget held in March (yearly financial report and proposals by the chancellor of the exchequer) was widely panned and, on the surface imposed yet more restrictions on the majority including an unpopular freeze on the state pensions while approving a 5% tax cut for the most wealthy in society – bad public relations and timing if ever you wanted it. Even the current weather fits the current mood. So ironic that once a drought warning was issued for half the country, the heavens opened and it simply hasn’t stopped raining since. One thing all governments need to bear in mind is that the British people like to protest and to rebel – it is inherent in the UK psyche with Uranus in conjunction with the more easy going Libran ascendant. Those protests often stay under the surface until time is right (Uranus in 12th house), but when we decide to let loose those feelings, we let those in power really know about it.

UnitedKingdom transits

The picture on the 3rd May 2012, the date of the local elections in the UK, is very stressful. We have transiting Pluto on the nadir of the UK chart within a degree on being conjunct to the UK Sun opposing the Midheaven and square to the ascendant and transiting Uranus is on the descendant square to transiting Pluto opposing the Ascendant and square to the Midheaven. All the major angles of the chart are being put under duress at the same time as well as the Sun and because these planets move so slowly, this situation which is now in place is going to hold for at least a couple of years.

May 3rd 2012

Ok, looking at the current picture in the United Kingdom, the upcoming local elections and the events surrounding them I think will act as a watershed moment for the next couple of years. On the day of those elections, the UK’s chart ruler Venus (Libra ascendant) will be grinding to a halt before preparing to go retrograde later in May. She turns on the star El Nath in Taurus. As in France where a shift of power is taking place, the power of the anti-establishment feeling fostered by this conjunction could be very significant. El Nath at the tip of the horn of Taurus the bull is traditionally seen as a terrible weapon, a point of power which can be wielded for good or for evil.

Looking above to the astrology wheel, transiting Venus will be opposing the UK Mercury, the place where the voice of the people will be heard. I think that the UK’s voice will be heard in those elections, and the ruling Conservative and Liberal coalition parties may take a fearful battering. I don’t just think that the opposition Labour party will benefit, all opposition parties of all persuasions will do well, including ones with more controversial views. Venus will also be in conjunction with the star Bellatrix which sits on the shoulder of Orion and as well as in conjunction with fixed star Capella in the constellation of Auriga the charioteer. When Venus connects with these stars, alternative or rogue views in society come to the fore (Bellatrix) and the values of society are challenged and freedom from restrictions are sought (Capella). Sounds like the voice of the UK will be in the form of protest and support for more extremist views against the impositions that the current government are imposing. There are public service protests and strikes planned for 7th May 2012 which very much fits in with the picture the planets and stars are painting.

Of course, I am only looking at one planet here, there are other factors in the background at work too – the following connections are valid for London. Transiting Neptune over this period will be in paran relationship with the fixed star Hamal, the brightest in the constellation of Aries which Bernadette Brady deciphers as “upheavals over matters to do with oil & chemicals”. Here in the UK we have the highest petrol prices in Europe, and their is a simmering tanker-driver’s dispute which could paralyse the UK and spread panic throughout the population. There’s more – the Heliacal Setting Star (the last star to set at the descendant before the Sun rises) for this time of year is Denebola which sits at the tail of the Lion in Leo. You don’t mess with the king of the beasts, and Brady says that Denebola here brings “clashes with the Establishment”.

Looking at the position of the Moon and the Sun on or around the 3rd May, the Moon is in paran relationship with both Betelgeuse (in Orion) and Menkar (a very difficult star in the jaws of Cetus the Whale), so tensions will be running very high both with the leader (David Cameron) and with the people. The Sun will have paran relationships with Zosma (the star on the back of the lion in Leo) and Capulus (the nebula that sits in the sword of the constellation Perseus). Both these connections can be rather nasty – Brady says about Zosma in connection with the Sun that  “a group of people are the innocent victims of a senseless act” and her interpretation of Sun/Capulus isn’t much better hinting at “a violent or ruthless person or event”. Some unfortunate event may happen which could capture the attention of the British people.

The pressure cooker atmosphere in the UK is going to explode somewhere along the line, and it could be as soon as next month as the background influence of Pluto square Uranus tightens it’s grip. All this is before the 21st May Solar Eclipse which squares the UK Pluto and hits in the UK house of change, big business, financial debt and dealing with finances of other countries. More of the repercussions of this hit, when I write about this new eclipse in the coming weeks.

William Shakespeare – The astrology of the father of English literature

Posted on 1:55 PM by Unknown

william shakespeare

In Britain we have been celebrating the 448th birthday of the Bard, the greatest of all England’s literary greats, William Shakespeare. Speculation surrounds the day when he was actually born and I think that Astrology can help prove when his birthday actually is. One thing we do know for sure is that there is documented proof that he was baptised in Stratford upon Avon on 26th April 1564. Often babies were baptised 2-4 days after birth, and common knowledge has always been that he was born on 23rd April, but after looking at the stars I tend to disagree. One other piece of information given by Astro Databank is that William was born at 08.30am. This time seems reasonably accepted, although I do not know it’s veracity. In this piece, I try to explain that most astrological assumptions and speculation about his day of birth being the 23rd April are I believe incorrect.

WilliamShakespeare natal

The above chart if you are wondering is set for the 22nd April 1564 taking the 8.30 am time that everyone uses, the day I believe he was actually born on, but is adjusted as the Gregorian calendar was in use at the time of Shakespeare’s birth. It is remarkably similar to the chart quoted by Astro Databank and other astrologers, except the Moon is in the 4th house in Virgo rather than in Libra if he was born on 23rd April.

I have always seen that the great writers always seemed to have a strong Virgo influence in their chart. The combination of Taurean Sun and Virgo Moon seems to me a very logical mix for a writer and poet. One would have ease of expression, common sense and good organisational ability, vital in planning the plot structure of any piece of work. The Virgo Moon is sharp and insightful especially with language and writing & Shakespeare was a genius in using words and the expression of them. That is what we remember him for, not the romantic production and possibly the self-adulation of his work which would have been more expressed if he had had the Moon in Libra and had been born one day later. The Moon in the 4th house was very patriotic and very tied to his mother and his family. A Virgo Moon is very sensitive and shy about showing ones feelings & often there is tremendous love inside that cannot be expressed verbally, so one way to express these emotions would be through Virgo’s ruler Mercury - in writing. Mercury we find in the 10th house, the house of work and profession. It would not surprise me if most of the romantic sentiments that lay in his heart came out assertively in the manner of Aries where Mercury was found through his plays, sonnets and poems.

It is known that the Pluto in Pisces generations were blessed with unbelievable insight and intuition, here we have heightened imagination combined with lofty goals in life. With Pluto conjunct to a Pisces Midheaven, William would have been superbly imaginative and this talent was inherent in his being as the trine to his Cancerian ascendant showed. Pluto squared onto a very romantic and gentle Neptune Venus conjunction – here is love and idealism with a dark underbelly, light and shade, frivolity and depth of character.

This Venus Neptune conjunction opposed Uranus in the 5th house of creation, self-expression and love affairs. Having Uranus in the 5th would have had a crazy sense of humour, and would have been attracted to creative people of all creeds. Uranus in the 5th is spontaneous, kind and a bit eccentric. Rumours abound that William may have been gay. All I can say is that with a Venus/Uranus opposition it is possible. With Venus in the 12th house, one often wants to keep romantic liaisons behind closed doors, and the nature of Uranus is to experiment and “be different”.

With Sun in Taurus in the 11th house, the need to build a comfortable life for himself and his family would have driven William on to work hard. He would have shined in group work, working as part of a team and with Neptune also in the 11th house, here is the link to the theatre and to the troupes of actors of which William was one – he often appeared in his own productions.

He would have been a non-aggressive person, as Mars on his birth was in Cancer and with Mars in the 12th not very assertive in promoting himself, indeed his name only started to appear credited on his work once he had reached his 30’s. Mars in Cancer will protect one’s family at all costs and can get rather irritable – one with this position needs a supportive and understanding partner.

The final two planets on the chart to look at are Saturn and Jupiter in the first house. We have an interesting balance here of optimism and darker pessimism and he would have swung between the two depending on his mood of the time. Jupiter is in Leo, optimistic proud, seeing the big picture, loving the limelight knowledgeable and wise, feeling one is a king. Saturn is in Cancer, fearing emotional vulnerability, rejection and dependence on others. Having security of thought and being is key for Saturn in Cancer. Shakespeare was just as adept at writing light hearted verse and prose as he was tragic plays, reflecting those changing emotions present in his soul.

Now why was Shakespeare such a brilliant writer and why is he so revered? I think the answers lie in the connections of the planets to the fixed stars on his day of birth. Below is a list of connections between the planets and the stars for 22nd April 1564.

There are many connection to the creative arts, being popular and leaving a legacy of work in this collection of links between the fixed stars and the planets however the key star in my eyes is Spica which joined with both Venus and crucially Mercury on 22nd April. Spica is the brightest star in the constellation of Virgo, it is the wheat sheaf which the Virgin holds in her hand as in offering a gift. Virgo is one of the constellations that Mercury rules which makes this connection very powerful indeed, and the gift Spica bestows is brilliance and genius like quality in whatever one does, in this case through the power of communication, speech, quickness of mind and thought and through the ability of inventive writing. Of course that Mercury sat in the 10th house of career and we all know how brilliant Shakespeare was, especially revered years after he passed away.

Note also that Spica’s influence only started to be felt in his middle age, true by all historical accounts, as Shakespeare early in his writing career was seen as a young upstart whose writing was not regarded as special. If William had been born on either 21st or 23rd April 1564, this connection to the star Spica would not have been effective and thus he would not have benefitted from it’s blessing. Only on 22nd April could it have affected his character, and this is why I alone in the astrological community think that he was born one day earlier than everybody believes.

Bahrain – Grand Prix lights the fire for protest.

Posted on 1:41 PM by Unknown

Bahrain protests

The arrival of the Grand Prix circus to Bahrain, associated with it’s glamorous image & high profile sponsors proved too much of an opportunity for the Shia opponents of the Sunni ruling dynasty to ignore. Since last year when the uprising on the island kingdom of Bahrain was brutally crushed by King Al Khalifa, tensions have been simmering under the surface. Shia Muslims make up majority of Bahrain’s population and seeing other nations in the region overthrow unwanted dictators, the Bahraini people also attempted (and failed) to change the balance of power last year in the Pearl revolution attempt, named because most of the action took place near the Pearl roundabout, so named as a statue holding a giant pearl is the centrepiece of the financial district of Manama in the heat of the city. The arrival of the grand prix also coincided with the Bahraini natal chart under duress sparking the troubles highlighted in the world media.

Bahrain transits

On the chart above, there are a lot of aspects in blue & purple, a sure sign on the colour system I use of tension and opposition. The main protagonist on this chart causing much of the tension is the transits of the nodal axis. The South Node, the node of detriment is now at the midpoint of the Moon/Saturn conjunction on the natal chart. This conjunction shows the hold the ruling classes (Saturn) have over the general public. With the South Node now stationed on this conjunction, this power over the people is being shaken up. It is really interesting too that is was a sporting event that is proving the motivation for the protesters to get out onto the streets. The transiting Nodal axis is square to Mercury which sits on the cusp of the 5th house of sporting endeavours. How more appropriate than Mercury being in the spotlight, as this planet rules transportation and of course cars. The Moon/Saturn as well as the Bahraini Jupiter Neptune conjunction connection is also being attacked by transiting Neptune which is now in a stressful square – uncontrolled mobs now roam the streets of Manama highlighting the disparate and indefinable nature of Neptunian energy fuelled by the international exposure (Jupiter) brought by TV cameras (ruled by Neptune) from around the world, trained on the island kingdom and it’s people.

Transiting Pluto, the planet of change is square to natal Uranus which also sits in the sporting 5th house and rules the Midheaven representing the people at the top of society, as well as being trine to that aforementioned Mercury. Controls on the assembled media (Mercury) and the protesters (Uranus) may well be tried, but will they succeed? The inconjunct aspect between transiting Pluto and the natal Moon is irritating, and the protests of general public may well be a thorn in the side of the king for a time to come as Pluto is now in retrograde motion heading for an exact inconjunct aspect at the start of June and possibly a showdown in December as Pluto makes it’s final connection. The chart ruler Venus is now trine to Mars urging action to be taken by the police and military forces to curb the excesses of the protests.

It is worth looking at the relationship of the current planets in conjunction with the stars too, as they can confer just as potent a story to what is going on within the kingdom. By the way, a “paran” is an inherent link between a planet and a fixed star. For example, when if a planet is rising at the ascendant (local horizon) on the day in question and a fixed star at that moment is also hitting an angle on the natal chart, the two are linked and are said to be “in paran”. This link is significant, as each star and each planet have different qualities that when merged have an effect on the particular point of earth that the connection is made.

The following analysis is set to Manama and made through Bernadette Brady’s Starlight programme. It makes interesting reading. – the fixed stars are in blue.

On Nadir when Achernar is Culminating orb 01 mins 59 secs -
Leaders change, new leaders come out of chaos - Arising and lying hidden

Just reading down the delineations of the connections between the stars and the transiting planets for Manama, Bahrain for the past few days exactly describes the mood of the people and their violent protests. There has been a death of a protestor shown by the connection of Sirius to the Moon – a martyr has been created. There are indications of people gathering together, new leaders coming to the fore and having a common goal to force change.

The stars and the planets indicate that this is a very unstable time in this part of the world and with the aforementioned South Node close to connecting with Bahrain’s natal Saturn, one to keep an eye on in the weeks ahead as the ruling Sunni Monarchy come under even more pressure to give up more power to the people.

The French Elections – France gets ready to hail a new leader.

Posted on 3:36 AM by Unknown

french voting

On Solaris Astrology I always like to look at different ways of examining the planets and the stars in working out someone’s character or the likely outcome to a situation. In the past few months I have become more and more intrigued by Visual Astrology – that is connecting the sky we see at night to what is happening here on earth. I find this relevant as it connects back to the origins of the subject which I now study and blog about. Thousands of years ago, the people of the day had no TV or entertainment of sorts, and in the evenings their attention would have naturally been drawn to the skies above them, the stars, planets and constellations and their steady progressions across the night skies. The planets are characters in a moving play, the constellations and the mythology of them add to a drama that is forever unfolding before one’s eyes, yet few on earth now pay little if any attention to what is happening right above us. We should!! I now know that much wisdom has been lost in the mists of time, and on discovering the wonderful work of Aussie astrologer Bernadette Brady, I realised that the messages that the night skies relay do have real credence to today’s world, not only on an Astrology wheel on a computer screen, but right in front of our eyes every night. Today at looking at the French elections I aim to prove this point.

Tradition handed down over thousands of years says that Venus confers a blessing on whoever she shines her light. Furthermore, the time when Venus is visible to the naked eye be it when the Sun is rising or setting gives a signal that the established rulers of the day are being conferred different types of power. Seen as morning star visible just before the Sun rises, Venus traditionally allows the ruler to act more independently, maybe more rashly and freely. Naturally, at the time of an election, this tends to favour someone who already holds power, the incumbent. When Venus is visible as an evening star, visible in the sky after the Sun sets then the tradition says that the rulers of the day act more as a team, co-operation is the name of the game, making deals with others. This more “political” air suits the rise of a challenger who needs to make the deals and gain the support to take the crown and the power of the day. Go back over all the previous US elections and more often than not, where Venus is located in the sky and where she shines her light determines who and which side wins the day.

The French Election shows a really interesting picture. I now add a couple of other actors to the cast. Saturn in astrological mythology represents the established leader. Saturn as you will know from my blog is harsh, makes the hard decisions, brings patience and authority. Jupiter on the other hand in old Astrology was know as the pretender to the throne, the prince in waiting. Jupiter shows optimism, learning, a gambler’s instinct and need to expand one’s horizons, all qualities a potential leader needs before he takes the ultimate step and accedes to the throne.

22nd April 2012

Now look at the night sky for the 22nd April 2012 over Paris, France. The picture above shows the Sun setting on the horizon, closely followed by Jupiter in conjunction with the Moon which is passing directly over the top of it – the people (the Moon in mundane “national” astrology represents the general population) conferring favour on the Prince of the night sky - in France the “heir” to the throne, Francois Hollande. Following on behind is Venus, which as you can tell at this time of year is the evening star. If you look out tonight and in the nights to come in the early evening to the West you will see Venus shining brightly. Where is Saturn, Sarkozy the established ruler? Nowhere to be seen. This to me says that there is going to be a shift of power in France, no two ways about it.

6th May 2012

This election may not be cut and dried and may have to go to a second round of voting on 6th May. If we look at the night sky for that evening the picture has changed a little but the story is even more conclusive. On this day, the Prince in waiting, Francois Hollande will get the full power of the Sun itself as Jupiter and the Sun make a conjunction and the transfer of power in France will be complete. The Sun in mundane Astrology shows the leader or king of the country, where the power lies. It does also suggest as this will be the signature for his Presidential term that this will be an expansionist term of office for the new ruler. Growth (Jupiter) of the flagging economy in France is going to be a main plank of the agenda that Hollande is going to push over the next few years. Venus conjuncts with the star El Nath, the tip of the Bull’s horn in the constellation of Taurus. This is very significant, as El Nath is a star that when combined with Venus shows anti-establishment tendencies, an opposition view and encourages one to go against social customs. Venus is showing her approval for the one with the opposing view of the establishment. Hollande I suspect will literally “take the bull by the horns” and immediately start ripping up all the old Sarkozy policies to instil his new more socialist agenda. Notice how one can make sense out that the positions of the planets and their connections with the stars. I find it fascinating, and I hope you do too.

All this analysis has been made possible by the wonderful Starlight programme that was developed by Bernadette Brady. Over the next weeks and months I will be combining my normal astrological approach of using the astrological wheel that we all know and love & combining it with the visible movements of the planets as well as their relationships with the constellations and stars in the skies – in essence pulling all the information we have at our fingertips and in the heavens above us to enlighten and to guide us through the difficult times of this Summer that lay ahead.
